Smartcard Access

We have been made aware that a number of contractors and locums have faced challenges in obtaining smartcards and appropriate access, particularly multi-site (FFFFF code).

We have worked with the RA in simplifying the process for pharmacists who live within the Greater Manchester LPC localities; Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside & Glossop, Trafford, Bolton and Wigan. The latest contact list for the RA team covering Greater Manchester can be found here

If you do not live in one of the local authority areas specified then you will need to contact the local RA in the area that you live in. Details can be obtained here.

Under the new CPCF, it is imperative that pharmacists have the appropriate access to deliver services such as CPCS where SCR access is vital in assessing patients suitability for the emergency supply element of the service and clinical assessment in the minor conditions element. To this end GMLPC is working to support the workforce in removing any barriers to delivery.

To ensure contractors who live in the Greater Manchester have an effective mechanism to obtain and update smartcards, GM LPC has agreed the following ways of working:

Update: Provisionally registered pharmacists can also now use the links below to set up their Smartcard

Lost Smartcard

If you have lost your smartcard you must notify the Registration Authority immediately. Details can be obtained here.

No Smartcard

We would recommend that every colleague involved in the dispensing and handout process has a valid smartcard. This includes locums. If you don’t have a smartcard then you can request this via one of the two mechanism below

  1. A request is made directly by the designated sponsor for your pharmacy via the Care Identity Service (CIS) portal. This is the simplest , easiest and preferred method. This will enable you to arrange for an RA Agent to visit your pharmacy when you will be asked to show identification documents to the RA.
  2. You complete the Smartcard Request Form and GMLPC will send your information on your behalf  to the RA who will get in touch with you directly. To obtain a new smartcard you will be asked to show identification documents to the RA . This will require you to visit the RA office in person.

Requesting SCR access on your smartcard/adding locum access

If you are a registrant and also require SCR access adding to your smartcard you must complete the SCR CPPE e-assessment and select the option in your profile to share details with the Registration Authority (RA).You can request this via one of the two mechanism below:

  1. A request is made directly by the designated sponsor for your pharmacy via the Care Identity Service (CIS) portal.  Completing the CIS form will allow the Registration Authority (RA) to assign the necessary roles required on your card. This is the simplest , easiest and preferred method.
  2. You complete the Smartcard Access Request Form and GMLPC will send your information to the RA who will get in touch with you directly.

If you are a locum or on relief covering more than 5 pharmacies please select the locum access.

Sponsor

Every contractor should have a sponsor already set up who has access to the Care Identity Service (CIS) portal. This is the most effective way for you to request any changes to smartcards. If you are unsure as to who your Pharmacy sponsor is please email the RA team on gmss.smartcards@nhs.net.
