CPPE: New PGD Workshop for Pharmacy Technicians Wed 28th Jan, 7:00–9:00pm

Pharmacy technicians are now playing a bigger role in service delivery with new responsibilities under Patient Group Directions (PGDs).

To support this change, a new programme, PGDs: Empowering Pharmacy Technicians to Provide Services, has been launched.

The workshop is designed to help pharmacy technicians feel confident and competent in supplying or administering medicines under PGDs. With a clinical focus on the NHS Pharmacy contraception and smoking cessation services, participants will learn to apply regulatory frameworks in practical scenarios, deliver person-centred consultations, and recognise when referral is needed.

The programme is highly interactive. Pharmacy technicians will practise challenging consultations in a supportive environment, explore potential challenges to PGD use in their role, and share solutions with peers. The workshop also encourages networking, creating opportunities for pharmacy technicians to build local communities of practice and address health inequalities together.

For employers, the benefits are clear. Supporting pharmacy technicians to deliver NHS services increases access for patients and frees pharmacist time to focus on prescribing and advanced clinical care. This approach aligns with the NHS 10-year plan which highlights the need to revise workforce skill mix across pharmacy teams.

By the end of the programme, participants will be equipped with practical strategies to use PGDs safely and effectively. They will feel more confident in taking professional responsibility and in expanding their role to provide essential services.
