Smoking Cessation Advanced Service Update – Contractors, Pharmacists Locums and Pharmacy teams

This communication is for  pharmacies who have registered to provide the Smoking Cessation Advanced Service on the MYS portal

CPPB are currently in the process of deploying the Smoking Cessation Advanced service in GM with secondary care trusts. This is to enable referrals for the stop smoking service to be sent to Community Pharmacy via PharmOutcomes from secondary care.

The SCS service is now live in the Tameside locality as of 30th March 2023

This communication is for  pharmacies who have registered to provide the Smoking Cessation Advanced Service on the MYS portal. If you do not wish to provide the service you must notify NHSE via the MYS platform providing one month’s notice.

We have come across a number of incidents where patients have been referred to local pharmacies to find that the staff and Pharmacists are not aware of the service and /or not providing the service  despite our records showing that the pharmacy is registered to deliver the service via MYS.

Please could I ask that you ensure your locums, Pharmacists and members of the team are aware and trained to provide this service. Please share this information with your locums, area managers and Head Offices.

We understand there are significant pressures  in the system so if you cannot provide the service, please email alison@cpgmhealthcare.co.uk urgently so we can manage this appropriately.

The following trusts are also now live:

  • MFT (Wythenshawe, MRI and North Manchester Hospital
  • Northern Care Alliance – Rochdale and Fairfield Hospital
  • Bolton Hospital
  • Stockport- Stepping Hill Hospital
  • Salford Royal
  • Wigan
  • Tameside

Resources, Training  and Support

To successfully deliver the service, pharmacy teams should ensure the following:

  1. All pharmacy team members are briefed and have completed the relevant training
  2. PharmOutcomes is checked regularly throughout the day for referrals. REMEMBER! This task can be carried out by any member of the pharmacy team
  3. Patient follow ups must be completed within the 5-day window of receiving the referral. REMEMBER! This task can be carried out by any member of the pharmacy team as the aim of this part of the process is to explain to the patient what the service is, what they can expect and to arrange an appointment with the pharmacist at a time convenient for the patient and the pharmacist involved
  4. N.B there is a significant risk of patients running out of NRT or starting smoking again if the pharmacy does not contact the patient in a timely manner

Thanks for your continued support at this time. Please let us know if you have any queries.
