Community pharmacy services

Pharmacy services fall into three categories, which are commissioned differently. The NHS Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework sets out the arrangements and criteria.

Essential services – all contractors provide these under the NHS Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF). They are commissioned by NHS England and include general advice and dispensing of prescriptions.

Advanced Services – these are services within CPCF that pharmacies can provide if they meet the requirements set out by the Health Secretary. They are funded by NHS England.

Locally-commissioned enhanced services – these are services that may be commissioned by ICPs or local authorities, depending on local need and priorities, rather than on a national level.

NOTE: If you would like information/advice about how to get commissioned to provide an advanced or local enhanced service, contact us on 0161 228 6163 or via enquiries@cpgm.org.uk

Locally Commissioned Optometry Services in Greater Manchester

The CUES is an extended version of the optometry MECS service which allows remote consultation and uses IT capability to provide a digital service. In some areas, an Independent prescriber may be used to prescribe medicines for the patient.

For further details please refer to the service summary, available here

The Community Pharmacy MECS service supports the optometry CUES service in the following localities: Bury, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside.

Where a medicine is required, this will normally be supplied or prescribed by the optometrist, as part of the consultation, through the issue of an NHS CUES written order. The written order is signed by the prescriber. This will be supplied by a community pharmacy of the patient’s choice.

In all other GM localities where a medicine is required, Pharmacies will directly be supplying or selling (where appropriate), “Pharmacy only” (P) medicines and General Sales List (GSL) medicines, and the following POMs: chloramphenicol, cyclopentolate hydrochloride, fusidic acid and tropicamide against a written signed order.
